“The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in the land.” Song of Solomon 2:12

A Spoonful of Poetry

Someone once told me that the poet pours sunlight into a spoon. Imagine that! A spoonful of sunshine just waiting to be swallowed, lighting up our inner beings, our souls, our spirits! And what would we find buried there? What is the poet inviting us to explore? A poem may put us in touch with our deepest longings, our passions, and our insights. It might unearth things about ourselves that we have kept under wraps for years. Poetry sparks our imagination and makes us look at life in a different way, and it opens us up to the wonders of the world around us. We are surrounded by poetry. It is present in words put to music, in the hymns and sacred songs. There is poetry in nature, a bird in flight, in the graceful leaping of a deer, or a dolphin. And one can witness it in the glory of the night sky. There is poetry in the Bible. Just read the Psalms or Song of Solomon. God has blessed us with beautiful words and sights and sounds to soften the harsh realities of life, and even as the world changes around us the power of poetry will remain the same.
