On Jan. 12 from 5:30-7 p.m., the Stonewall Gallery will open their winter show featuring the recent work of Portland artist Robin McCarthy. Wine, cheese and light refreshments will be served at the free opening reception.
In her work, McCarthy employs an antique letterpress and old wood type as well as collage elements from old books and found objects.
“My purpose in painting, printmaking or collage is to make order out of chaos,” said McCarthy. “I want to simplify an image as clearly and directly as I can, getting at the essence of that image by using color and shape.”
McCarthy graduated from the Maine College of Art in 1987 with a degree in painting. Since then, she has made collage her central interest. She is also a social worker, a wife and mother, and a grandmother.
The show will be on view at the Stonewall Gallery through Feb. 25. The Gallery is located within the Yarmouth History Center at 118 East Elm Street and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
