Three people escaped serious injury when the car they were riding in catapulted over a snowbank Sunday morning and landed on the icy Saco River in Hiram.
Maine State Police said the car plunged 50 feet onto the frozen river off Route 113 about 8 a.m. but did not break the ice.
“Unlike many other lakes, streams, and rivers in Maine where the ice is not stable, the car did not break through the ice,” said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
A man and two women in the car were treated for minor injuries. All three are from New Hampshire and are from the same family.
State police did not release their identities. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, which released no additional information Sunday night.
