BRUNSWICK — A memorial service for Phyllis Austin will be held Monday, January 23, 2017, 11 a.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 1 Middle St. in Brunswick. Austin, the former editor of the Maine Times, died in November at the age of 75.
She covered the State House for the Associated Press and in 1972 became AP’s first environmental writer for New England. In 1974 she began working for the alternative paper the Maine Times, writing about forestry, land use, public utilities, rural community development , and conservation. She authored the biographies “Wilderness Partners: Buzz Caverly and Baxter State Park” and “Queen Bee: Roxanne Quimby, Burt’s Bees, and Her Quest for a New National Park.”
In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to Final Exit Network, which provides education regarding end of life choices, at www.finalexitnetwork.org, and to the Amboseli Trust for Elephants at www.elephanttrust.org.
