CLINTON, N.Y.
The Bowdoin College women’s basketball team scored the first 17 points of the game and cruised to an 88- 46 New England Small College Athletic Conference win over Hamilton on Friday evening.
The Continentals dropped to 9-10 (2-5 NESCAC).
The Polar Bears put the game out of reach early. Bowdoin took advantage of five Hamilton turnovers in the opening quarter and used a stifling defensive effort to hold the Continentals to just 13-percent shooting in the opening frame.
Bowdoin led 22-4 after one quarter and held a 38-20 lead at halftime.
The Polar Bears pushed their advantage to as many as 44 points in the second half en route to the win.
Maddie Hasson played 11 minutes for Bowdoin and hit all 10 her shots, accounting for 22 points, leading 14 Polar Bears onto the scoresheet. Marle Curle led Bowdoin with seven rebounds and four assists, while Hannah Graham was second on the team with nine points.
Bowdoin made it a weekend sweep with an 82-52 NESCAC rout of Middlebury.
The 23rd-ranked Polar Bears are 17-3 overall, 6-2 in the NESCAC, while the Panthers fell to 15-6 (5-3 NESCAC).
Bowdoin took command in the second quarter, out-scoring Middlebury, 32-11 for a 56- 29 halftime lead.
A dozen players scored for Bowdoin, led by 12 points from Taylor Choate and 10 from Curle.
Bowdoin visits Husson on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Men’s basketball
Jack Bors netted a game-high 22 points to lead Bowdoin to a key NESCAC win, 83-75, over Hamilton on Friday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.
In a hot-shooting first half for both squads, Bowdoin carried a 47-41 lead into the break thanks to 64-percent shooting. Bors scored 12 early points for the Polar Bears, but Hamilton was able to stay within striking distance thanks to 12 from Kena Gilmour and six 3-point baskets.
Up seven early in the second half, Bors hit a running jumper to spark a quick 8-0 spurt that included a pair of David Reynolds baskets to take a 67-52 lead with 11:04 remaining. The Polar Bears maintained a double-digit lead until the six-minute mark when Hamilton closed the gap to nine points. The Continentals got as close as six points, 81-75, with 1:16 remaining thanks to a late 9-2 surge, but failed to get closer.
In addition to Bors, Bowdoin received huge contributions from Liam Farley (16 points on 7-of-8 shooting) and David Reynolds (14 points on 7-of-9 shooting) off the bench. Jack Simonds had 14 points, while Hugh O’Neil had a team-best nine rebounds.
On Saturday, the Polar Bears suffered an 87-57 NESCAC loss to 16th-ranked Middlebury.
Bowdoin is 11-10 overall, 2-7 in the conference, while the Panthers improved to 18-3 overall, 6-2 in the NESCAC.
Middlebury connected on 10 3-pointers, with Jake Brown and Matt St. Amour scoring 16 points each.
Tim Ahn had 16 points for Bowdoin, with Simonds chipping in 11.
Bowdoin visits Wesleyan this upcoming Friday at 7 p.m.
Men’s hockey
Bowdoin never trailed in a 3-1 NESCAC home win over visiting Amherst on Friday evening, snapping a threegame losing streak.
After a scoreless opening period, the Polar Bears grabbed the first goal when Cody Todesco fired a bouncing buck into the Amherst net.
Amherst tied the game with 4:25 remaining in the middle frame on an Austin Ho goal, but Bowdoin answered at 7:05 of the third period when Mitch Harrington beat Amherst netminder Connor Girard.
Two minutes later, Todesco made it a 3-1 contest.
Bowdoin out-shot Amherst, 25-24, with goaltender Peter Cronin making 23 saves for the win. Girard had 22 stops.
On Saturday inside Watson Arena, Hamilton scored two goals in the third period to skate away with a 3-1 NESCAC win.
Bowdoin dropped to 8-12 overall, 5-9 in the NESCAC, while the Continentals improved to 13-3-4 overall, 7-3- 4 in the conference.
Chris Wallace scored the lone Polar Bears goal, and Cronin had 40 saves in net.
Bowdoin visits Wesleyan this upcoming Friday at 7 p.m.
Women’s hockey
The Polar Bears spoiled a three-game Hamilton winning streak with a 2-1 NESCAC victory on Friday in Clinton, N.Y.
Brooke Soloman gave Bowdoin a 1-0 lead just 4:47 into the game off a feed from Julie Dachille.
Hamilton evened the contest with five minutes left in the second period, with Olivia Hawes cleaning up a rebound for a power-play goal.
With 6:43 remaining in regulation, Dachille notched the game-winner for Bowdoin. Jess Bowen sent the puck in from the point to Marissa Fichter, who slid a pass to Dachille on the left post.
Sophia Lattanzio had 37 saves for the win in net. Hamilton netminder Sam Walther had 28 stops.
Bowdoin dropped a heartbreaker to Hamilton on Saturday, as the Continentals rallied for a 3-2 overtime win.
The Polar Bears fell to 11-7- 7, 6-5-2 NESCAC, while Hamilton is 12-6-2, 7-4-1 NESCAC).
Bowdoin led 2-0 on a goal each by Fichter and Brigit Bergin.
But, Hamilton scored two goals in the third period to force overtime, and won the game on a Sam Taffe powerplay goal.
Lattanzio had 26 saves in the loss.
Bowdoin hosts Connecticut College on Friday at 7 p.m.
