AUBURN

It was the Haley Frohlich and Mariah Vaillancourt show Wednesday night as the Edward Little/Leavitt Poland Red Hornets defeated the Yarmouth/Freeport Clippers, 6-3 in a Northern girls’ high school hockey quarterfinal contest at Norway Savings Bank Arena.

Frohlich scored four straight goals in the second period and finished with a total of five points. Vaillancourt, meanwhile, had two goals in the first period and finished the game with three points.

“I knew this is one of the games I knew that mattered,” Frohlich said. “It was a one-and-done situation, so if I didn’t go out there and put the work in, put that 100 percent effort in, it’s my senior year I would have been done. I went out there and gave a 110-percent effort.”

It was the Clippers (7-12) who came out strong, and their defense didn’t allow a shot the first six minutes of the contest.

“The difference was their shots started to go in and ours didn’t,” Clippers coach Megan Vaughan said. “We couldn’t put the puck past the goalie today. (Maranda Guimond) did a very good job.”

Guimond made 16 saves in the victory, while Isabelle King made eight saves in the losing effort.

The Red Hornets (14-4-1) had Tuesday off because of a snowstorm, and needed a half of a period to get going.

“Not having practice yesterday, certainly we were a little slow coming out of the gate,” Red Hornets coach Shon Collins said. “I will also say, (Yarmouth/Freeport) had some intensity, and that definitely accentuated we weren’t quite at full speed.”

Vaillancourt put the Red Hornets on the board with 3:14 remaining in the opening period when a Samantha Martineau shot from the right point was deflected by Taylor Callier. Vaillancourt came from the back side uncovered, picked up the loose puck and had a half-open cage to shoot at.

She scored her second of the game with 1:23 remaining in the period when she received the puck in the slot from Frohlich and fired it home.

Again the Clippers had a strong start in the second as Katie Clemmer kept whacking at the puck in the crease and it finally went in 46 seconds into the period. Sophie Newberg and Caroline Grant had the assists.

The rest of the period was the Frohlich show. She put the Red Hornets up 3-1 at the 2:10 mark of the middle frame with a nice assist from Vaillancourt. The next shift, 1:18 later, she made it 4-1 with assists going to Angel Drouin and Simard.

“I think Mariah started the game for us, she kind of put those points on the board,” Frohlich said. “She got us extremely excited and hyped for next period to go on. I think that’s what got me a little motivated because she’s my linemate. She’s there for support.”

She completed the natural hat trick as she picked the top corner from the left circle at the 9:51 mark of the second period. Martineau picked up her second assist of the game. Her fourth goal came from nearly from the same spot, this time taking a little off her shot as it fluttered to goal and the bottom dropped out at the last second to get past King. The goal came at the 11:37 mark with Simard picking up the assist.

“I thought Haley was really moving her feet a lot and she realized low shots might create opportunities if they didn’t go in,” Collins said. “With a newer goalie, the rebound control won’t always be there. She was finding ways to get pucks to the net and a couple of them seemed to have a mind of their own.”

The Clippers had another strong start in the third as they controlled play the first five-plus minutes. They put their second goal on the board when Grant found Newberg in the slot at the 5:36 mark. The duo struck again with 1:12 remaining in the game.

The win moves the Red Hornets to the Northern semifinals, where they face the Greely Rangers (16-2), who received a bye as the No. 2 seed. That game is scheduled for Friday at the Falmouth Family Ice Center at 6 p.m.
