OLD ORCHARD BEACH—James A. “Jim” Vorias, 94, possibly this resort community’s oldest business person, both in age and longevity, of owning and operating his own business in this town, at the time of his death. He died, Feb. 14, 2017, at his home after a brief illness.

Mr. Vorias was born, in Biddeford, Nov. 3, 1922, a son of Anastosios and Anastasia Vorias. He was educated in Saco Schools and graduated from Thornton Academy.

At the age of 17, he joined the Naval Reserve. He later activated in the Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater on submarines. Following his discharge, Jim attended college on the GI Bill in Florida.

His local business career started in the early 1950’s in Old Orchard Beach, when he established Palace Fruit in the former Palace Ballroom building, on West Grand Avenue. He later established the “Seven Seas” parking lot in the late 50’s on East Grand Avenue which he expanded over the years and operated until the time of his death. He also operated the Seven Seas Bar and Grille, Villa Marion Motel and Apartments, with his wife, Alexandra.

During the winter months, he was employed as a Merchant Marine of 17 years.

He was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Portland, a former member of AHEPA of Saco, the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Old Orchard Beach, and the National Maritime Union.

Jim enjoyed cooking, especially during the Holidays for his family and friends. He was an avid reader, of history, especially Naval History. He enjoyed watching old classic movies, his garden and feeding the birds on his properties. Jim loved the ocean and the change of seasons. He loved animals and especially the family’s cats.

Predeceasing him besides his parents were siblings, Georgia Ostrowski, Louis Vorias, Charles Vorias, and Efthalia Hamill.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Alexandra Aliferakis, whom he married on May 13, 1956 in Providence, Rhode Island; two daughters, Anastasia Vorias and Elaine Vorias; two sons, Peter Vorias and Nicholas Vorias and his wife, Doreen; a sister, Mary Vorias, Saco and Florida; two grandchildren, James N. Vorias and Arabella Vorias all of Old Orchard Beach; a step-granddaughter, Alicia Micheli and her husband, Russell; a step-great-granddaughter, Talia Baldinelli, all of Cranston, Rhode Island; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017, Trisagion Service will be held at 6 p.m., at the Old Orchard Beach Funeral Home, 36 Portland Ave., Old Orchard Beach. A Funeral Service will be held at noon, Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 133 Pleasant St., Portland. Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held at the family lot in St. Demetrios Cemetery in Biddeford.
