Durham Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quakers) in Durham Maine strongly opposes the presidential executive action against refugee resettlement and entry into the United States from seven majority Muslim nations.
As members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) we believe that “ there is that of God in every person.” We also believe in Jesus’ commandments to “love your neighbor as yourself ” and to welcome the stranger. Similar teachings can be found in all other major religious traditions.
We also honor the American tradition of welcoming immigrants and refugees to our shores as inscribed at the Statue of Liberty: “ Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”
President Trump’s executive action runs counter to the core values found in the teachings of Jesus and in the teachings of other major religions, and to the long American tradition of being a country which at its best has welcomed those looking to create a better life for themselves and their families.
We encourage people of all faiths and creeds, religious or secular to join us in calling on President Trump to rescind this executive action.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
