A Sagadahoc County sheriff’s deputy escaped serious injury when his cruiser crashed into a tree Saturday morning in Bowdoin.

Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry said Deputy Allen Huntington, 55, of Lisbon, who was finishing an overnight shift, may have fallen asleep at the wheel and lost control of the cruiser.

The cruiser, a 2013 Dodge Charger, was traveling west on Main Street about a quarter-mile from the Lisbon town line when it veered off the left side of the road and struck a tree nearly head-on at 6:49 a.m., the sheriff said.

Huntington was treated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and released.

Merry said he expects Huntington to be back at work in a few days. Huntington has had no prior vehicle mishaps in his 10 years with the sheriff’s office, Merry said.

The accident is being investigated by Maine State Police.
