SACO – Following the lead of Biddeford and Old Orchard Beach, the Saco School Department will hold classes on March 24 to make up one of the district’s snow days.

The Saco School Board voted unanimously Wednesday night to hold classes on March 24, a day that was previously scheduled as a teacher workshop day.

Area school departments have been discussing how to accommodate days missed due to winter weather this year.

The district has had six snow days this year, and last month staff were surveyed regarding their preferred way to make up one of the snow days. Superintendent Dominic DePatsy said in a memo to the community that of those 222 surveyed, the most popular response was to use Friday, March 24, as a student day.

The last day of the school year in Saco is now scheduled for June 22.

Biddeford and Old Orchard Beach had also previously scheduled a teacher training day on March 24. The Biddeford School Committee took the lead in being the first to vote to hold classes on March 24. Regional School Unit 23, covering Old Orchard Beach, announced soon after Biddeford’s vote that it too would hold classes on March 24, though the School Board still has to make an official vote on the matter next week.

RSU 23 Superintendent of Schools John Suttie said in an interview earlier this month that he and the superintendents in Biddeford and Saco touch base before creating their district calendars, as they all have students that attend the Biddeford Regional Center of Technology and also have to coordinate students from Dayton who attend their schools.
