Joseph Verrill was taken into custody Saturday by Sanford Police, who were able to extinguish a blaze in the basement of his home at 2 Dale St. with fire extinguishers.
Sanford Fire Department arrived at the scene and made sure the blaze was extinguished, said Detective Eric Small.
Police were called to the home at 6:39 p.m. after a report of a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, they noticed a fire in the basement, entered the home, put the fire out and took Verrill into custody, Small said.
Verrill was originally held without bail. He made a first court appearance on Monday at Springvale District Court via video from York County Jail. A judge set his bail at $5,000.
On Sunday, police were called to 2 Dale St. for a report of a car crash into the dwelling. It was unrelated to the prior day’s events, said Small. There was no word on any extent of damage to the home.
