TOPSHAM — Robert Raymond Nunn “Bob” died peacefully on March 16, 2017 in Topsham, Maine at the age of 87.

Robert is survived by his wife Linda Jane Nunn, his four children Laura Nunn, Elizabeth Nunn, Kate Mini (Jeff) and Peter Nunn and his six grandchildren Claire Chiboub, Maggie and Sam Nunn, Erik, Lucy and Dylan Mini.

Robert was born on October 21, 1929 in East Orange, NJ to William Harvey Nunn and Marie Anthony Nunn. He worked hard to put himself through all levels of school even tuning tops and also played in a band on the Jersey Shore. He received his BA from Rutgers University followed by his MA from Middlebury and his PhD in French Literature from Columbia University. It was there, at Columbia, that he met Linda whom he would marry in 1959. Robert served in the army during the Korean War where he worked with the CIC Corps in France from 1951-1954. He then returned to America, teaching French literature at Bowdoin College. He remained there for 40 years, finally to retire in 1999.

Bob was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. His interests showed the gentle and kind person that he was. Bob played classical guitar well into his eighties. He sailed the southern Maine coast in his wooden sailboat. He loved reading and classical music. He also enjoyed walking his dog Jasper which he did every day for as long as he was able.

Visitation will be held from 2-4PM on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME. A brief service is scheduled for Noon on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Maine Veteran’s Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road in Augusta, Maine. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home in Brunswick, Maine. Donations in his name can be made to the Bowdoin College Scholarship Fund.
