TOPSHAM — The Maine State Senate honored The Highlands retirement community’s Go Green Committee in recognition of their Environmental Leadership certification by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Sen. Eloise Vitelli of Topsham presented the committee with a legislative sentiment on March 8, 2017.
The Highlands Go Green committee initiatives include: Installing solar panels, using corn-based compostable utensils and dishes at public gatherings, providing bus service to residents which means cutting back auto emissions from individual cars, recycling kitchen cooking oils, distributing reusable bags and recycling information to residents, installing a new salt-water filtration system for the indoor swimming pool and composting food waste and other biodegradable materials throughout their community of over 350 residents.
