Two members recently scored perfect scores at a math meet, receiving 40 out of a possible 40 points on the arithmetic and geometry questions. The meet was sponsored by the Southern Maine Elementary Math League and was held at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland on March 16. The meet consisted of 24 local schools. Each school sent a team of six students. Foster’s team finished in sixth place with two of the team’s members getting perfect scores. THE PHOTO ON THE RIGHT, contributed via Brunswick Junior High School: Members of the Brunswick Junior High Math Counts team who placed first in the Regional Competition at the University of Southern Maine in February, earning them a place at the State Final Competition at Kennebec Valley Community College in March. At the State Final Math Counts Competition, the team finished in second place and had excellent individual placements as well. In a field of over 60 competitors, Micah Pietraho finished in third place, which earned him a spot on the Maine State team to compete at the National Math Counts Competition in Orlando, Florida in May. Leo Douhovnikoff finished in 7th place and Isaac Albaugh finished in 8th place after an exciting oral countdown round. Tyler Patterson was 16th overall. The team is coached by Susan Weddle, an 8th grade math teacher at BJHS.
