Walter B. Stults, 95, died March 29 at Carol Woods after a brief illness. He was born in Hightstown, NJ on October 25, 1921, the son of the late C. Stanley and Nettie Black Stults.
Mr. Stults graduated from the public schools in Hightstown and from Williams College, Williamstown, MA in 1943 with a B.A. Degree in political science. From January 1943 until January 1946, he served as an enlisted man in the Army Air Force in the U.S., Australia, New Guinea, and the Phillipines. Following his military service, he attended Princeton University Graduate School as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, receiving an M.A. Degree in politics.
In January 1949, Mr. Stults went to Washington with U.S. Senator Robert Hendrickson (R, N.J.), serving as his legislative assistant. From 1950 to 1961, he was Staff Director of the Senate Small Business Committee, holding that post under both Republican and Democratic Chairmen.
Mr. Stults became President of the National Association of Small Business Investment Companies and remained in that position until he retired in 1987. During those years, he also served as Chairman of the Council of Small and Independent Business Associations, a board member of the Small Business Legislative Council and as Chancellor of the Exchequer Club of Washington.
Following his retirement, Mr. Stults became a business consultant and served as a Director of Pardee Resources Co. of Philadelphia and of the Sunwestern Investment Group of Dallas.
Mr. Stults moved to the Carol Woods Retirement Community, Chapel Hill, NC. In 1992. He became active in Carol Woods activities and served as President of its Residents Association for two years and as a member of the Carol Woods Board of Directors from 1994-1996 and 2000-2006. He was also a member of the United Church of Chapel Hill.
Mr. Stults married the former Ann D. Haynes of Clarksburg, W.Va. In 1947. She died in April 2002 after 55 years of marriage. In 2003, Mr. Stults married Jean Morris Curtin, of Clarksburg, W.Va. and Georgetown, Maine. They lived in North Carolina and Maine until his death.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew and Rhonda of Chapel Hill; Thomas and Tina of Long Creek, SC; two grandsons, Hayden and Cooper Stults; his step son Robert Curtin of Brunswick, Maine and step daughter Susan Stevens of Georgetown, Maine; and seven step-grandchildren, Katharine Gustafson, of Portland, Maine, Nathan Stevens of Charleston, W.Va., Laura Stevens of Raleigh, NC, Sarah Brown of Georgetown, Maine, and Molly Stevens of Miami. Also surviving are a number of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Celebration of the life of Walter Stults will be held at Carol Woods on April 12. There will also be a graveside service at the East Windsor Cemetery in Hightsown, NJ later in the spring.
