The Bowdoin College softball team earned a series sweep against Husson University with a tight 2-1 victory in game one and an 8- 5 win in game two on Friday evening at Colby College.

Bowdoin took an early 1- 0 lead in the bottom of the first. Allison Rutz put the ball in play and gave Ali Miller the opportunity to score from second. Olivia Smith evened the game in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly. Back-to-back doubles by Rutz and Claire McCarthy gave Bowdoin the go-ahead run, with McCarthy recording the RBI. Rutz and McCarthy both went 2-for- 3 at the plate.

Rutz put in seven innings in the circle to earn the win. The first-year allowed just two hits while notching three strikeouts.

The Polar Bears exploded for four runs in the bottom of the second inning of the second game to take the lead. Miller drove in the game’s first run with a hard chip to first that was misplayed. Soon after, a bases- loaded walk by Emily Griffin doubled the tally. Jordan Gowdy crossed home on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 3-0.

Caroline Rice doubled to left field for her first RBI of the day and gave the Polar Bears a 4-0 lead after two. Husson scored a pair of runs in both the third and fifth innings to even the game.

Lauren O’Shea gave the lead back to Bowdoin in the fifth with a bases-loaded triple to right, driving in Rice, McCarthy, and Samantha Valdivia. Rutz hit a two-out single to right in the bottom of the sixth, allowing Griffin to come around from second and give the Polar Bears an 8- 4 edge. The Eagles put one more on the board in their last at-bat, but were unable to close the gap.

Samantha Roy went 4 2/3 innings for the Polar Bears and allowed six hits, four runs, with five strikeouts. Katie Hoadley earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of work and two hits allowed. Hoadley fanned a pair of batters. O’Shea went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Bowdoin ran its winning streak to six with a 9- 3 rout of Trinity on Sunday.

The game was the third of the series that began a week earlier. Bowdoin claimed two wins to improve to 2-1 in the Eastern Division.

On Saturday at Middletown Conn., Bowdoin swept a doubleheader from Wesleyan, 7-3 and 3-2.

The Polar Bears are scheduled to play at the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Track & Field

Bowdoin opened its spring home campaign with the Bowdoin Invitational on Saturday at Magee-Samuelson Track.

The Polar Bear men lapped the field with a team score of 158, easily out-distancing second-place UMaine-Farmington (41) in a field of seven squads. The women’s team totaled 85 points to trail only the University of Southern Maine, which won the women’s side with a team score of 105.

John Pietro led the way for the Bowdoin men, capturing a hat trick of wins in the throwing events. He won the shot put (47-09.25), the discus (139-00) and the hammer throw (170-08), setting personal bests in the hammer and discus.

On the track for the Bowdoin men, the Polar Bears got wins from Yaw Sekyere in the 200-meter run (23.05), Owen Tuck in the 400 (52.38), John Keneally in the 800 (1:59.92), Ben Torda in the 1,500 (4:02.47), Nathaniel Kent in the 110 hurdles (15.88), Alan Banks in the 400 hurdles (58.89) and Thomas Namara in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:34).

The Polar Bear men also swept the relays with wins in the 4 x 100 (44.62) from Tuck, Colin Tiernan, Stephan DeCarlo and Sekyere, and in the 4 x 400 (3:39.70) from Tiernan, Huma Dadachanji, Conor Donahue and Garrett Thomas. Joseph Staudt claimed the high jump (6-02), Jack Moynihan won the pole vault (12-01.75) and Brian Greenberg took the long jump (21-0.25).

For the Bowdoin women, the Polar Bears got first-place showings on the track from Caroline Shipley in the 400 (1:02.45), Meghan Bellerose in the 800 (2:18.28) and Sarah Kinney in the 3,000 steeplechase (12:02.7). Bowdoin won both relay events— the 4 x 100 (50.27) courtesy of Samantha Schaefer, Amani Hite, Georgia Bolduc and Morgen Gallagher, as well as the 4 x 400 relay (4:17.35) with the team of Shipley, Leah Matari, Bellerose and Sara Ory.

Pamela Zabala picked up a pair of victories in throwing events for Bowdoin, claiming the shot put (35-06.75) and the discus (116-10.50).

The Polar Bears will return to action this upcoming Saturday with a home meet against Middlebury beginning at 11 a.m.

Women’s lacrosse

Bowdoin rolled to its second win in as many days Sunday, running away from Wheaton in a non-conference win, 16-4.

The eighth-ranked Polar Bears improved to 9-2.

Bowdoin jumped ahead 5-0 in the first eight minutes of play, led by two goals from Hannah Hirschfeld.

After Wheaton’s first goal of the day, Kelsey Gallagher countered two minutes later for the Polar Bears, sparking a 6-0 run that lasted the following 12 minutes as the Polar Bears carried an 11-2 lead to the half.

Hirschfeld completed her hat trick two minutes into the second half with an assist from Leigh Fernandez as the Polar Bears had the game in running time for most of the second half. Kara Finnerty joined Hirschfeld with a hat trick to lead the Bowdoin scorers. Allison Williams has two goals and two assists in the victory.

Three Bowdoin goalies saw action — Kayli Weiss, Erin Morrissey and Jess Cloutier.

The Polar Bears owned a 33-12 edge in shots and 17-5 advantage in draw controls for the contest.

The Polar Bears rallied on Saturday for a 16-12 NESCAC win over Connecticut College at New London, Conn.

Finnerty and Hirschfeld each had five goals in the win.

Bowdoin hosts Colby in a huge NESCAC contest on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.

Men’s tennis

Bowdoin rallied from a deficit following doubles play to edge Amherst, 5-4, in a match between nationally-ranked foes Saturday in Massachusetts.

The third-ranked Polar Bears improved to 10-1 on the season, while the 14thranked Mammoths fell to 12- 3.

Bowdoin trailed 2-1 following doubles action as Gil Roddy/Justin Patel claimed the lone point for the Polar Bears with a tiebreaker win 9-8 at No. 3 doubles. The two other Polar Bear teams lost by 8-6 and 9-8 scores.

The Polar Bears rallied in singles play, drawing closer to Amherst with a quick 6-1, 6-3 win from Luke Carstens at No. 6 and 6-4, 6-1 win from Kyle Wolfe at No. 3.

Gil Roddy captured a victory at No. 5 singles, 7-6, 6-4, but the Mammoths drew even and the score was tied at 4-4, leaving just Luke Tercek on the court at No. 1 singles for Bowdoin. After dropping the first set, Tercek rallied to win a tiebreaker in the second set and pulled away impressively for a 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 win and give the victory to the Polar Bears.

Women’s rugby

The Polar Bears suffered a 55-27 setback at the University of Rhode Island in their opener on Saturday.

Strong winds played a big factor, as each team scored all of their points when the wind was in their favor.

Rhode Island carried the play in the opening half and built a 55-0 advantage before Bowdoin stormed back.

Cristina Lima scored a pair of tries in the second half while Liz D’Angelo, Mackenzie Philbrick, Paige Pfannenstiel also reached the try zone. D’Angelo accounted for one conversion kick.

Bowdoin will return to action this upcoming Saturday against Dartmouth College at 2 p.m. at Pickard Field.
