After graduating from Michigan State University with a Chemical Engineering Degree and completing ROTC, Earl accepted a commission in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. He was an instructor of mobile radar tracking and computer systems designed to detect and track hostile aircraft and guide AJAX missiles to their targets during the Cold War years (the world’s first operational surface to-air missiles). He achieved the rank of Captain and was honorably discharged.
Earl worked for Michigan Bell where he developed early computer systems and retired after 32 years.
He was a devoted family man with a strong, but gentle spirit, and an infectious laugh. He lived a faith-filled life, loved this country, and bled Green and White. Humble and kind, always preferring others to himself, supportive to all in their endeavors, he led by quiet example.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
