SANFORD —  A fire that is believed to have started in a dumpster outside the former St Ignatius Church and school, currently being renovated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland for senior housing,  shot up the exterior of the building and in through a third floor window.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on St. Ignatius Street, off Main Street, at 3:48 p.m.  Crews from half-a-dozen departments helped Sanford firefighters fight the fire or provided station coverage, including Alfred, Goodwin’s Mills, Kennebunk, Lebanon,  Shapleigh and Rochester, New Hmapshire. Wells EMS was also at the scene.

No one was injured.

Sanford Fire Department Capt. Dwight Emmons said crews were able to leave the scene just around 6 p.m.

Emmons said there was some  damage to the interior wall and ceiling above the third floor window.

The former church and school is being renovated and expanded by the Bureau of Diceasan Housing for senior housing. The 66-unit project is scheduled to be completed this fall.

Bishop Robert P. Deeley was on hand in October to bless the building site as the work began.
