After falling behind 3-1 early in the first quarter, the Trojans would go on a 7-0 run to finish the first half and take the 8-3 lead.
The Trojans stayed hot in the third quarter, outpacing the Stags 5-1 to extend the lead to 13-4 heading into the final period, and managed to close out the game and secure the first win of the season.
“It was good, Cheverus was definitely a good opponent. To put that many up on them, they have a really good defense and a really good goalie, we definitely were able to generate offense,” said TA coach Ryan Hersey.
John Giroux led the Trojans with a whopping, game-high six points. Wyatt LeBlanc finished with a trio of goals, while John Camire and C.J. Labreck added two each. Thomas Levasseur, Thomas Pike and Tucker Weeks tallied one score apiece.
Ean Patry also had impressive showing in the cage for TA, racking up 14 saves on the day.
Colby Anton and Jesse Pierce led the Stags with two goals each, while Finn Cawley, Max Coffin and Chris St. John each added one. Cheverus goalie Sean Walsh recorded 13 saves in the loss.
Hersey was pleased with his team’s offensive output despite having a slow start in the first quarter.
“We spread the ball around — the kids figured out that if they ran the offense then they would get better looks than if they were freestyling. As soon as they figured that out we were able to go off in the second quarter and (Cheverus) didn’t score in the second quarter and scored just once in the third,” said Hersey.
Hersey was also impressed with Patry’s performance, especially down the stretch when the Trojans took control.
“Ean was lights out in the third quarter — he made six or seven saves that could have easily been goals. He was able to really let us get that lead on them,” said Hersey.
The Trojans improve to 1-0 on the year and will take on Marshwood next Tuesday. Despite the hot start, the Trojans look to keep things in perspective and build on Friday’s victory.
“We’re going to try to be humble — we beat these guys last year and I think it’s just a matter of realizing that we still have a few things to work on,” said Hersey. “It was a great first game and a great win but we need to recognize that there’s a lot of room for improvement.”
The TA girls also opened their season with a bang, topping visiting Sanford 18-3 on goals from nine different scorers.
Amanda Cyr led the Trojans with a game-high six goals, while MacKenzie Basile chipped in four. Adeline Paradis added a pair of scores, while Megan Russell, Cat Henaire, Alana Pettaway, Morgan LeBlanc, Shannon Moskowitz and Alyssa Felton added one apiece.
