April is National Poetry Month.

Let’s write a poem or two.

You write one for me,

and I’ll write one for you.

I’ll go first, if that’s okay

And you can take your time.

And remember that to be a poem,

it doesn’t have to rhyme.

Who Am I?

I’m sun and I’m rain,

some times dry, sometimes wet.

I bring heat and then snow.

Winter’s over, and yet …

keep your winter boots handy,

keep your sandals nearby,

I might plunge to the 30’s

then rise and soar high.

I am melty and frosty.

I’m brittle and muggy.

I’m blue sky and brilliance.

I’m foggy and buggy.

I’m steamy and humid.

I’m damp and I’m chilly.

I’m crackly and arid,

then muddy and silly.

I’m a step into Springtime.

Summer’s still far away.

But I call and I coax you

to come outside and play.

My sweet breezy breath

riffles shoots of bright green

as the hardiest plants

are the first to be seen.

The crocus corm tips

poke their way through the earth

and I offer a promise

of life — of rebirth.

Yes, I change and I tease

and I flirt with your senses.

I dance and I frolic

as Springtime commences.

I’m poetry and music.

I am color and light.

I’m sunshine and shadow.

I’m day and I’m night.

I’m April, sweet April,

Remember my name

and I’ll tell you my secrets

as we play Springy games.

Well, that’s mine. A bouncy sort of rhythm and rhyme just seemed to mirror Spring, and so this poem wanted to be a rhyming one.

Now, it’s your turn. What poem is waiting — wanting to be written down? Surely there’s at least one. It’s springtime after all. Perhaps you have an April poem of your own. Or maybe, there’s one that has nothing to do with April at all.

You can share it with me if you like. No matter your age or circumstance, I’d love to hear it.

I’ll be waiting …
