Thank You, Officer Mahar
Being the victim of a hate crime can ruin your whole day, but, oddly enough, it didn’t. I was on the wrong side of a few rowdies recently, and the conflict escalated to the point that police involvement was necessary. I was expecting a cold, formal response as I drove into the station, but Officer Patrick Mahar handled the matter with astonishing competency and compassion. I left the place in a good mood and with a feeling that someone cared. As an ornery progressive, I’m more at home looking for the bad in people and situations. Thanks to Patrick Mahar and the others at the Brunswick Police Department for making my job that much tougher.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
