Cub Scouts learn and earn

Some of the Webelos of Cub Scout Pack 87 recently learned some engineering from Sean O’Leary of the R.J. Grondin & Sons construction firm.

The Cub Scouts were given company construction caps and earned their Build It and Engineering pins. O’Leary told them about the company’s projects and allowed the Cub Scouts to use a computer program that maps site elevations.

The pack meets at St. Anthony’s in Westbrook and the boys are from Cumberland, Gorham and Westbrook.

Learn to restore window sash

Bagala Window Works, 677 Main St., Westbrook, is hosting a free Sash Revival Day at 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, to help homeowners learn to fix their old, broken windows.

The event will feature hands-on training that includes replacing glass, touching up glazing, patching rotted wood and more effective painting techniques.

“A lot of people have come through this shop to learn window repair,” says Marc Bagala. “When homeowners want to know how to glaze a sash or re-hang their weights, we teach them, so they can maintain the beauty of their historic homes and keep their old windows operating another 100 years.”

“More than 150 patrons, 20 canine companions and 11 sponsors came out for a glittering evening of local food, fur, fancies and fashion, all to raise awareness of service dogs, and to eliminate the financial barriers veterans face in obtaining a life-changing dog,” Planet Dog said in a press release.

The funds raised will directly support the raising, training, and placing of service dogs.
