BRUNSWICK — Brunswick Junior High eighth grader Maggie Johnson is a state finalist — one of 53 out of 1,000 — in the National Library of Congress’ “Letters About Literature” competition. Johnson wrote to author Steve Sheinkin about his book, “Bomb,” and what it meant to her as a formative reader. Johnson’s name will be published online among the other Maine finalists.
Another eighth grader, Julia Pols, has been selected as the Mathilda Schlossberger Outstanding Middle School Student of the Year, for her short fiction piece, “And That Which Survived Rampant Fire Could Not Survive Merciless Hands,” a story of a Jewish Holocaust victim. The Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine will be honoring Julia and other human rights activists and students at a ceremony in June.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
