OLD ORCHARD BEACH — On Saturday, the Old Orchard Beach Police Department had a retirement party for one of its most beloved and well-known members.

Gunther, the department’s K-9, was stepping down from service after nine years of service. Detective Chris St. Pierre has been his handler since 2008, when the German Shepherd was 10 months old.

It was an emotional time as members of the department gathered behind the Police Station listened to the official announcement of Gunther’s retirement over the department’s loud speaker, and watched the dog jump out of the police vehicle for the last time. There were hugs to St. Pierre from co-workers and family members who took time to acknowledge Gunther’s retirement and service. Gunther shied away from several attempts from people to take his picture, and relaxed in a grassy spot next to a picnic table.

St. Pierre and Gunther have a very close bond, having done extensive training together and worked side by side every work day for the past nine years.

“I’ve always loved dogs,” said St. Pierre. “It’s the best job in the world when you can bring your dog to work every day.”

Gunther has assisted the Old Orchard Beach and neighboring police departments in incidents that included tracking criminals, drug seizures and finding missing children.

Gunther has received numerous awards, including a national award for his work tracking and apprehending a dangerous bank robber.

“It’s unbelievable,” said St. Pierre regarding Gunther’s accomplishments. “That’s why it’s so hard for me.”

The large German Shepherd not only excelled at police work, but is also good with children, and served as an ambassador to the community making public appearances and classroom visits.

Gunther has also lived with St. Pierre and is very much part of his family. He will continue to live with St. Pierre and his family now that he is retired.

“He is a wonderful dog,” said Caroline St. Pierre, wife of Chris. “He’s so gentle with our 3-year-old son.” She said Gunther could expect a steak in honor of his retirement, and can look forward to relaxing and enjoying spending time with his family.

Detective St. Pierre said the Police Department plans to get another K-9, and he will be the dog’s assigned officer.
