Gus was born in Brunswick on May 29, 1926, the son of Augustin and Pamela (Bois) Bergeron. He graduated 8th grade from St. John’s, and then let education give way to working hard.
Gus proudly served in the U.S. Army during both World War II and Korea from 1944 to 1951. For his service, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Class, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Honorable Service Lapel Button for World War II, which were all presented to him by the office of Senator Angus King in June 2015.
He married the love of his life, Pearl (Charltray) Bergeron, on July 5, 1952 and together they raised five children, eight grandchildren and just welcomed their fifth great-grandchild.
After leaving the military, Gus worked in construction for many years, and then transitioned into working for the Brunswick School Department as a custodian for the Junior High School. He retired from the School Department in 1991 and then devoted his full attention to his family.
Gus enjoyed his retirement by traveling with Pearl, visiting his country, his family, and casinos from coast to coast. He had a lucky streak. He was proud of being able to provide for his family, and, in the summers, could always be found in or near the in-ground pool in their back yard. As the family grew, so too did the poolside gatherings. Gus could always be heard encouraging swimmers to “Kick those feet! Kick! Kick! Kick!” or to “Keep that noise down!”
Gus was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Alcide, Henri, Gerard, Robert (Archie), Conrad (Jackie), and Alfred (Pete) Bergeron; and sisters, Clemence (Mortimer), Berthe (Labbe), Grace (Allard), Florence, Pauline (Saucier), and Irene (Hutchinson.) He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 65 years, Pearl; as well as his sons, Paul, and his wife, Elizabeth, of Brunswick, Gary and his wife, Sue, and Steven and his wife, Debbie, of Freeport; his daughters, Elaine, of Brunswick, and Joyce Walker and her husband, Gregory, of Boothbay Harbor; and his son-in-law, Paul Lawrence of Fairfield. He also leaves behind his brother, Raymond, and his wife, Patricia; his sister, Cecile Baxter and her husband, Wilfred; 8 grandchildren & 5 great grandchildren. We love you, Gus, Dad, Pepere. Forever.
