BRUNSWICK
Police say no one was hurt after a man suffering from dementia was reported firing a gun inside a Brunswick home on Monday.
Police received a 911 call at 1:44 p.m. from a woman trapped in a room in her home on Lunt Road while her husband was shooting “and destroying the inside with a baseball bat,” a press release states.
Lunt Road was closed and a special response team called. Meanwhile, a communications officer continued to maintain contact with the wife inside the home.
Brunswick Police Cmdr. Mark Waltz said Detective Rich Cutliffe used a speaker in an attempt to coax the man out of the home.
It was unclear whether the man could hear Cutliffe. However, the man emerged from this home at about 2:35 p.m., just before the special response team was about to enter.
Officers placed the man in protective custody and he was transported to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.
No one was harmed during the incident.
Waltz said there were multiple weapons in the house, ranging from handguns to rifles. Police have taken the weapons for safekeeping.
It is still unknown what caused the man to begin firing a gun, but Waltz said it doesn’t appear to be criminal and is likely a result of dementia.
The incident remains under investigation.
