SIDNEY (AP) — Police say a driver who said he normally doesn’t speed accelerated to nearly 140 miles an hour on Interstate 95 in Maine after another vehicle came up “right on his tail.”

Sang Yook, of New Jersey, told state police he had been doing 75 miles an hour on June 6 in Sidney when the vehicle appeared behind him.

State police caught him on radar driving nearly twice the 70-mile-an-hour speed limit.

They said Yook’s BMW slowed rapidly upon seeing a cruiser, and pulled over. Police said the 65-year-old Yook got out of his car to ask for a break and refused to get back inside.

Police said Yook, jailed after he couldn’t make bail, pleaded guilty to speeding. He was fined $300.

Yook didn’t immediately return a message left on his New Jersey phone number Thursday.
