BRUNSWICK — James M. Elwell Jr., 83, passed away Friday June 16, 2017 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick with his family by his side. He was born September 26, 1933 in Brunswick to James M. Sr. and Madeline (Preble) Elwell. James attended Brunswick High School until he joined and served in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1955. On October 29, 1956 he married the love of his life Gloria Moody at Berean Baptist Church in Brunswick. From 1955 to 1963 he was employed at Stanwood Gulf in Brunswick. In 1963 he purchased Stanwood Gulf and operated it until December of 1977. James was also employed by the Brunswick School District at Hawthorne, Brunswick High School and retired as the head custodian of Longfellow School. He enjoyed bowling in the Merchant League at Yankee Lanes where he was known as “Beaver”, playing cards with family and friends and loved the time spent with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

James was predeceased by a son Michael D. Elwell, and his sisters Nancy Smith and Jane Moody.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gloria (Moody) Elwell of Brunswick, his children, James D. Elwell of Bath, Keith Elwell and his wife Gail of Topsham, and Lynn (Elwell) Creamer and husband Roland of Bath, 5 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a brother Kenneth Elwell of Randolph and a sister Mabel Pelley of Blue Hill and loved by his many nieces and nephews who all knew him by Uncle Junie or Uncle Buck.

Visiting hours will be from 6-8pm Friday, June 23, 2017 at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St. in Brunswick. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am, Saturday June 24th at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Beaumont officiating. Interment will be in the Maquoit Cemetery in Brunswick.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in James’ memory to The Bath Salvation Army.
