BRUNSWICK — Richard (Dick) Murray Barrett’s remarkable life ended peacefully on the morning of June 23, 2017 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick, Me. Dick served his country in the U.S. Navy for 23 years and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1980. Dick went on to work for the Brunswick Post Office for 25 years retiring in 2005. He also worked as a Security Guard for L.L. Bean, Inc. and retired for a third time in 2012. All who knew Dick will remember his loving spirit, gentle nature, sharp wit and unwavering commitment to his family. He was a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle with a passion for the outdoors – fishing, hunting, gardening as well as breeding and training Labrador Retrievers. Dick had a positive impact on all he met and will be greatly missed by his family, friends and 5 Labrador Retrievers.

Dick was born in Montpelier, VT on February 12, 1940, the son of Ernest and Mary Barrett. He grew up on a farm in Randolph and graduated from Randolph High School in 1958. He enlisted in the Vermont Army National Guard in 1957 and the United States Navy in 1958. He was transferred to Brunswick Naval Air Station in 1963 where he met and married the love of his life, Linda Heath Barrett. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage raising 3 children and loving their 4 grandchildren.

While in the Navy, Dick trained in the Meteorological and Oceanographic specialties, completed the Arctic Survival Training course, and served many deployments to Weather Facilities including Alaska, Iceland and Greenland, specializing in global ice analyses and satellite interpretation. He earned 5 National Defense Service Medals in 1961, in 1965, 1969, 1973 and 1977 and while Serving in the U.S. Navy, Dick earned his Bachelors and Masters of Business Administration Degrees from New Hampshire College in 1983.

Dick is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Heath Barrett of Brunswick, ME; his son and his wife, Bob and Michelle Rox of Brunswick, ME; his daughter Sandy Barrett Rideout of Durham, ME; his son, Randy Barrett, of Shoreline, WA; his grandchildren, Selena Rox, Samantha Rideout, Sarah Barrett, and Jacob Barrett, his sister and her husband, Eleanor Barrett Towne Neal and Larry Neal , of Tucson, AZ, his brother and wife, Ralph and Sue Barrett of Wilder, VT, and many nieces and nephews. He will always be in his family’s hearts.
