Maine Forest Rangers spent part of Sunday patrolling and continuing mop-up operations at remote Brandy Pond in Hancock County after lightning ignited a wildfire there on Saturday.
In a post on the Maine Forest Service website, the agency said the wildfire burned about 2 acres of forestland near the pond, which is located east of Old Town in Township 39.
The Brandy Pond fire was just one several fires that broke out over the weekend and kept the forest service occupied Saturday and Sunday.
Rangers said they are investigating two arson fires, including one that was set Sunday near the cemetery at Round Pond in the Washington County town of Charlotte, and the other on Saturday at Grafton Township near Old Speck Mountain. The forest service also battled a wildfire Sunday on an island in Cobbosseecontee Lake in Monmouth.
