KENNEBUNKPORT — Donald I. Sanborn, 83, of Kennebunkport passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017 surrounded by his family.

He was born on Sept. 6, 1933 to Lorenzo and Gladys Elora (Whittlemore) Sanborn in Windham, Maine. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as a chef for four years.

On Jan. 26, 1957, he married Roberta White at the Allen Avenue Unitarian Church in Portland, Maine.

He had left school after the 10th grade to work at Nissan’s Bakery to help support the family. He wor ked as a farmer, then as a sardine fisherman. He was then a lobsterman for 32 years and for 30 of them, he also owned Sanborn’s Lobster and Veggies. He was a member  of the American Legion.  

He enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities including gardening, hunting, camping, skiing and fishing. He loved his children and grandchildren very much. He would take his family to the Deerfield Fair every year and loved his many animals.

He is preceeded in death by two brothers, Leonard and Kenneth Sanborn, and two sisters, Judy Keenan and Marilyn Campbell.

Donald is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Roberta Sanborn of Kennebunkport; three daughters, Leona Lynn Sanborn of Saco, Debra Elora Sanborn of Lebanon and Dawn Malina Francoeur and her husband Ronald Paul Francoeur Sr. of Kennebunkport; a brother, Richard Sanborn and his wife Cleo of Raymond; three grandsons, Ronald Paul Francoeur Jr. and his wife Cheyenne of Kennebunkport, Tyler Robert Francoeur of Kennebunkport and Donald M. Sanborn of Saco; and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10;30 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2017 at the Church on the Cape, 3 Langsford Road, Kennebunkport, Maine.
