PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Jordan Matthews’ first chance to fill Sammy Watkins’ starting job with the Buffalo Bills ended with the newly acquired receiver sustaining a chest injury.

Matthews finished the two-hour practice on Sunday before being escorted off the field by a trainer. The Bills were unable to provide an update on the nature or severity of the injury because Matthews was still being evaluated.

It’s unclear when Matthews was hurt, though he did fall hard along the sideline while attempting to make a leaping catch in one-on-one coverage with cornerback Shareece Wright during a drill.

Buffalo gave up starting cornerback Ronald Darby to acquire Matthews and a third-round draft pick from Philadelphia in one of two trades it made Friday. The deal coincided with Buffalo trading Watkins to the Los Angeles Rams for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a second-round pick.

Matthews was a key addition in addressing Buffalo’s more immediate needs.

Though not considered as dynamic of a deep threat as Watkins, Matthews had 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns in three seasons with the Eagles.

JAGUARS: Wide receiver Marqise Lee was carted off the field because of a right leg injury, a potentially significant setback for a team already without rookie running back Leonard Fournette.

Lee fell to the ground during 7-on-7 drills and immediately grabbed his leg. His lower leg was immobilized before he was taken off the field on a cart.

The injury happened during Jacksonville’s first practice in its new indoor facility. It also came hours after the team shut down Fournette. The fourth overall pick in the NFL draft has a foot injury that Coach Doug Marrone called a “nagging issue.”

“We’re just being real cautious with it,” Marrone said.

Fournette sat out practice and is unlikely to work against Tampa Bay in joint practices Monday and Tuesday.

DOLPHINS: Running back Jay Ajayi joined team drills for the first time since he was sidelined by a concussion July 31.

Ajayi wore pads for the first time since the injury but left practice early because of hydration issues in the 90-degree morning sunshine. Coach Adam Gase said the issue was merely a matter of Ajayi regaining his conditioning.

Ajayi had a breakout season in 2016, when he ran for 1,272 yards and had consecutive 200-yard games.

SUNDAY’S GAME

LIONS 24, COLTS 10: Backup quarterback Jake Rudock took advantage of the injury-depleted Colts by throwing two touchdown passes to Kenny Golladay as Detroit won its preseason opener at Indianapolis.

The second-year quarterback played most of the first two quarters and wound up 13 of 21 for 142 yards. Starter quarterback Matt Stafford played one series, going 2 of 3 for 36 yards, with an interception.

With Colts quarterback Andrew Luck still on the physically unable to perform list following offseason surgery on a partially torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, the Colts sputtered, finished with 230 yards.
