Known to many, and loved by all, Alvin was a community fixture in Brunswick. His long white beard and hair were easily recognizable. Alvin could often be found at The Gathering Place, where he often helped with chores, MidCoast Hunger Prevention, at evening concerts on the mall, walking across the Green Bridge, or in the flea market. Untold numbers counted Alvin as a loyal friend.
Throughout his life, from childhood, Alvin spent hours latch-hooking rugs, creating a great number of large and beautiful works, which he usually gave generously to his friends. His other specialties were puzzles, remembering the tunes and words to old music, and giving advice.
Born in Richmond on April 18, 1943, Alvin was raised primarily in Bath. Alvin was married in 1975 to the former Joyce A. Nickerson, from whom he was later divorced, in 1982. They had three children, all of whom live in Maine, and survive him. In addition, he is survived by his sister Kathy and brother Ernie, both of Gardiner, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, and close friend Louise Gallagher.
A memorial service to honor Alvin’s memory will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at The Gathering Place on Tenney Way, off Union Street in Brunswick.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
