Two beach attendants have been charged with stealing beach fees following a sting operation set up by the York County Sheriff’s Department.

York County Sheriff William King said Melissa Pomerleau, 41, and Jason Truman, 45, had been living in a camper at the Limington Town Beach on Moy Mo Da Yo Road, where they were working as beach attendants at Horne Pond.

Town officials told police that the fees being collected were lower this year than in previous years, when neither Pomerleau nor Truman had been employed by the town. When Pomerleau told police someone had stolen more than $600 of fees from her camper on July 26, York County deputies grew suspicious, King said.

Deputies set up a sting operation, introducing marked $20 bills as beach fees with the help of citizens and a deputy. Deputies then followed Pomerleau to a store, where she paid for personal items with a marked bill. Pomerleau and Truman both admitted to stealing beach fees from the town, although they did not know how much money they took, King said.

The two were charged Aug. 22 with theft by unauthorized taking, and were released the next day on personal recognizance bail.

Pomerleau appeared Monday in Springvale District Court, where her case was continued. Truman is scheduled to appear in Springvale District Court on Sept. 21.

The York County District Attorney’s office is reviewing their cases, and more charges may be filed against the two.
