The Brunswick High School football team knew it had a tall task with Biddeford coming to town. After losing 23-0 to Messalonskee last week, the Dragons were hungry for the win.
They fell short of getting that win, falling to the passing attack of Carter Edgerton, 35-28 Friday evening.
“We lost tonight but our kids didn’t give up. They worked hard tonight and did everything the coaches asked of them,” Brunswick coach Dan Cooper said.
The Dragons (0-2) didn’t have an answer for Edgerton. The Tiger quarterback threw for 201 yards and four touchdowns. He was sharp, completing 10-of-15 heaves and connecting with Cody Saucier six times for 98 yards and two scores. The junior quarterback also rushed for 86 yards.
“Saucier hauled down everything thrown to him. We knew they would be passing, and they were really good at it tonight,” said Cooper. “They also had some unbelievable catches that could have gone either way that helped keep a couple of their drives going.”
Brunswick received the ball to open the game and took only three plays to reach the endzone behind a 64-yard touchdown run by Owen Richardson. The 2-point conversion failed.
Not to be outdone, the Tigers (2- 0) took their first drive and went 65 yards on five plays, getting a 19- yard TD run up the middle by Cameron Lantagne, and after the point-after kick, Biddeford led 7-6 just over three minutes into the contest.
Once again, the Brunswick offense wasted no time moving the ball down the field. Quarterback Nate Girardin found Aiden Glover in the middle, connecting for 38- yard gain to the Bidd-37. From there, Richardson ran the ball three times, hitting the endzone after breaking a pair of tackles for a 30-yard score. The 2-point conversion was again unsuccessful as the Dragons led 12-7.
“He ran well, and he’s only a sophomore too,” added Cooper.
“We were surprised of how fast (Richardson) was,” said Biddeford coach Brian Curit.
Biddeford re-claimed the lead on the first play of the second quarter when Edgerton found Saucier on a slant. The receiver waltzed into the endzone, giving the Tigers a 14-12 advantage.
Biddeford went deep into the playbook with a “hook and ladder” play with 35 seconds left in the half. Edgerton completed a pass to Saucier, who immediately pitched it back to Curtis Petit for the score.
“We had some more plays like that in the playbook that I wanted to use. We’ve practiced this so I was confident they could pull it off,” said Curit.
Brunswick moved down the field, taking advantage of Tiger penalties including a pass interference deep in Biddeford territory. Brunswick made it to the 1-yard line, but a defensive stop by the Tigers as time expired in the half secured a 21-12 halftime lead.
Back and forth
Each team traded touchdowns early in the third quarter. Edgerton hit Petit again for a 33-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to give the Tigers a 35-20 lead.
Brunswick scored halfway through the fourth quarter, highlighted again by the running of Richardson, and an 18-yard scamper from Alex Demars cut the lead Biddeford edge to just seven points with 7:38 remaining in the game.
The Biddeford defense allowed nothing more, killing the clock on offense and keeping Richardson and the Dragons in check on defense. The Tigers punted with just over a minute left, seemingly giving Brunswick the ball back. But a roughing the kicker penalty and an automatic first down sealed the victory for Biddeford.
For Brunswick, Richardson amassed a total of 216 yards rushing, including 124 in the first half. The Dragons ran for 256 yards as a team. On the defensive side, Jack Harvey and Kiko Lopez were strong in the middle, while Fred Komiega stuffed the line for the Dragons. Treyvon McKenzie had a sack and Noah Goddard had an interception.
Biddeford is now 2-0, while Brunswick fell to 0-2 and visits Cony on Friday at 7 p.m.
