AUGUSTA (AP) — The final day has arrived for supporters and opponents of tiny houses to make their case to the state of Maine.
Tiny house supporter and Democratic Rep. Seth Berry of Bowdoinhan has asked regulators to use their rule making abilities to craft rules about tiny houses. Municipalities in the state have struggled with how to regulate them and apply building codes.
The Maine Technical Building Codes and Standards Board was accepting comments through Thursday. The board’s expected to issue final recommendations later. Some tiny house fans have called for the state to adopt its first guidelines regarding the miniature homes.
Tiny houses are non-traditional dwellings that tend to be 100 to 400 square feet. They have grown in popularity in part because they offer a less-cluttered way of living.
