The Bowdoin College women’s volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a dramatic 3-2 win over Hamilton in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears completed a weekend sweep of NESCAC opponents and improved to 7-6 (4-1 NESCAC), while the Continentals fell to 6-5 (2-3 NESCAC). Bowdoin has won 16 consecutive matches against Hamilton overall.

After Hamilton won the opening two sets, 25-15 and 25- 19, Bowdoin rose up to tie the score with wins of 25-16 and 25- 17 in the third and fourth sets. The Polar Bears closed out the win with a 15-11 triumph in the deciding fifth.

Caroline Flaharty ended with 16 kills and 17 digs to lead the Polar Bears offensively, and also added a pair of service aces. Michelle Albright had 13 kills, 13 digs and four blocks, while Sydney Salle added 12 kills and four blocks. Kate Kiser dished out 43 assists, while Lisa Sheldon had 29 digs and 10 assists.

On Friday, the Polar Bears downed Williams, 3-0, with set scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-9.

Salle led both teams with 13 kills, followed by Flaharty with 10.

Bowdoin will hit the road next weekend for matches at Trinity Friday (8 p.m.) and Amherst Saturday (1 p.m.).

Cross country

Both the Bowdoin men’s and women’s teams swept the Bowdoin Invitational II with impressive showings on Saturday at the Pickard Cross Country course.

The Polar Bear men totaled 36 points to defeat runner-up Southern Maine (57) in a seven-team field.

The Bowdoin women claimed the win by posting 27 points, edging second-place St. Edwards of California (33) in an eight-team meet.

Sarah Kelley won her second meet of the fall, leading four Bowdoin finishers in the top six of the 6K race in a time of 22:42. Julia O’Rourke led a pack of Polar Bears in positions 4-6 with a time of 23:14.5, followed by Caroline Shipley (23:14.5) and Abigael Osmanski (23:17.3). Anne McKee rounded out the Bowdoin scorers with an 11th-place showing in 24:01.5.

Bowdoin’s depth carried the day in the men’s meet as the Polar Bears carded five of the top 10 finishers, despite not having one of the top three in the 8K competition.

Andrew McGowan paced the Polar Bears in fourth place with a time of 26:37.4. Sean MacDonald (sixth, 27:00.3) and Connor Rockett (seventh, 27:00.6), Luca Ostertag-Hill (ninth, 27:05.5) and Naphtali Moulton (10th, 27:05.6) finished in quick succession to close out the Bowdoin scorers for the event.

The Polar Bears begin the championship portion of their season this weekend as they travel to Boston for the Open New England Championship at Franklin Park on Saturday.

Bowdoin stayed within striking distance, but Amherst used a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to pull away in an eventual 31-14 victory on Saturday afternoon at Pratt Field.

The Mammoths remained unbeaten at 3-0, while the Polar Bears fell to 0-3.

Amherst got on the board on its second play from scrimmage when Jack Hickey split the Bowdoin defense for a 52- yard touchdown run.

Bowdoin replied later in the quarter, marching 76 yards on six plays as quarterback Griff Stalcup found Nick Vailas twice for big gains, the second time a 36-yard touchdown strike to tie the game at 7-7.

The Mammoths scored on their first possession of the second quarter, ending an eight-play, 83-yard drive with a 3-yard rush from Hasani Figueroa to take a 14-7 edge.

Amherst added a field goal before the half to take a 17-7 lead at intermission.

After Bowdoin went three-and-out on its first offensive possession of the second half, Amherst got a big punt return from Nate Tyrell, setting up a 38-yard touchdown pass from Ollie Eberth to James O’Regan.

An interception on Bowdoin’s next drive set up another Amherst score — a 23-yard rush from Eberth to make it 31- 7.

Bowdoin was able to trim into the lead in the fourth quarter as a 12-play, 65-yard drive ended with a 24-yard pass from Stalcup to Bryan Porter, cutting the final score to 31-14.

Bowdoin failed to get its running game in gear, totaling just 64 yards rushing and finishing with 215 yards of total offense. Stalcup went 12-of-22 for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Porter caught five passes for 65 yards, while Vailas caught two passes for 60.

Ryan Sanborn led Bowdoin with eight tackles. Chris Vachow had a sack and a fumble recovery for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin will play its third road game of the season this upcoming Saturday at Tufts. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

Women’s soccer

The Polar Bears cruised to an 8-0 Sunday afternoon victory at the University of Maine- Farmington.

Bowdoin improved to 5-2-1, while the Beavers fell to 3-5.

Claudette Proctor put the Polar Bears on the board 4:57 into play off a feed by Morgen Gallagher, followed quickly by a solo effort from Emma Beane under two minutes later. Gallagher tallied an unassisted goal in the 12th minute and Emily Pawlak added another for Bowdoin two minutes later. Claire Dardinski was credited with an assist on Pawlak’s goal.

Bowdoin visits rival Bates on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
