Composites company Owens Corning announced that it is closing its Brunswick plant after 10 years of operation, putting 60 people out of work.

Company spokesman Todd M. Romain confirmed that operations at Bibber Parkway would be winding down in the coming months.

Employees were told of the impending shutdown at a plant meeting Monday morning, Romain said.

Brunswick employees will not be relocated, and the first layoffs will occur in late December, Romain said.

The closure of the facility is driven by efficiency, as customers are geographically closer to the company’s Wichita Falls, Texas, facility. The Brunswick plant was acquired by Owens Corning in 2007.

Machinery and the production operation will be transferred to the company’s facility in Wichita Falls.

“The decision to close our Brunswick facility was primarily driven by the need to eliminate non-value added logistics expenses associated with the cross-country transport of input materials and finished goods to customers,” Romain wrote.

He noted that efforts and quality of the workforce in Brunswick have been outstanding, and had no effect on the decision to close the facility.

The Brunswick plant had primarily made fabrics for the wind power industry. Maine Composites Alliance executive director Steve Von Vogt said most wind turbines are manufactured in Texas and Iowa, so the company move makes sense.

Operations will also be shuttered at two other composites facilities, in Doudian, China, and Mexico City, Mexico. Those closures are expected to be completed over the next year, Romain said.

Owens Corning is an insulation, roofing and fiberglass composites company that employs 17,000 people in 33 countries. In 2016, the company recorded $5.7 billion in sales, according to the company’s website.
