The Wells Warriors started the 2017 season on top of the Journal Tribune Power Rankings as they were coming off a state championship and were the favorites to bring home a second straight Gold Ball.

While the Warriors have remained undefeated throughout the season, two other teams — Thornton Academy and Kennebunk — started the season strong and earned the No. 1 spot at different times.

Kennebunk had the top spot in the rankings over the last two weeks, but after a loss to Marshwood last Saturday, the Warriors have regained their No. 1 ranking as they are the lone unbeaten squad left in the Journal’s coverage area.

Here are this week’s rankings:

1. Wells

(7-0, at Mountain Valley tonight)

The Warriors dominated previously undefeated Lisbon last week and will look to complete the undefeated regular season on the road.

2. Kennebunk

(6-1, at Biddeford tonight)

Despite a heartbreaking 15-12 loss to Marshwood last week, the Rams only drop one spot in the rankings. Tonight’s showdown with Biddeford will be another test for Kennebunk, which is looking to lock up the No. 2 seed in the Class B South standings.

3. Thornton Academy

(6-1, at Sanford tonight)

The Golden Trojans are back on track after their lopsided loss to defending state champion Bonny Eagle a couple weeks back. Look for the Golden Trojans to try and finish the regular season strong as they prepare for another playoff run.

4. Biddeford

(5-2, vs. Kennebunk tonight)

The Tigers dropped games to Marshwood and Falmouth this season, but they were in both games and can compete with anyone in Class B. Biddeford will be looking to make a statement against Kennebunk tonight.

5. Sanford

(4-3, vs. TA tonight)

The Spartans have put together a strong 2017 campaign, but they will face a tough test tonight against TA. No matter what happens tonight, the Sanford squad will be heading back to the postseason.

6. Old Orchard Beach

(3-4, at Dirigo tonight)

The Seagulls have the athletes to compete with the best in Class D, but as the smallest school in the division, depth has certainly been a concern for Dean Plante’s squad. If the Gulls win tonight, they are heading to the playoffs. If they fall to Dirigo, they will need some help to get in.

7. Massabesic

The Mustangs are looking to make it two straight wins and finish the 2017 season on a high note. Sophomore QB Nick Roberge is going to be a force in the coming years and senior Isaac DesVergnes may be the most athletic player in the region.
