WATERBORO — The Massabesic football team started the season with six straight losses, but the Mustangs will take a two-game winning streak into the offseason as they picked up a wild 25-22 win over Deering in their season finale on Friday night.

Massabesic jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 4:30 left in the first quarter when sophomore quarterback Nick Roberge found senior wide receiver Isaac DesVergnes for a score.

The Mustangs would hold onto that 7-point lead heading into the halftime break.

Deering took an 8-7 lead in the third, but Massabesic would go back on top when Roberge hit DesVergnes for another touchdown to make it 13-8 in favor of the Mustangs with two minutes to play in the third.

After Deering regained the lead, the Mustangs would go to the air one more time and Roberge hit DesVergnes for their third touchdown of the night to give Massabesic a 19-16 lead with two minutes left in regulation.

Deering came right back with a touchdown with just 37 seconds left to take a 22-19 lead.

On Massabesic’s first play after the Deering score, the Mustangs would decide to go with a little trickeration — as Ryan St. Laurent caught a pass on the sideline and pitched it perfectly to Tomasso Mobiglia who raced 50 yards for the score.

The hook-and-lateral would give the Mustangs (2-7) their first-ever win on the new football field at Massabesic High School.
