The Bowdoin College women’s soccer team scored a pair of first-half goals at Connecticut College to collect a 2-0 NESCAC victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (9-4-1, 4-4- 1 NESCAC) handed the Camels just their second loss of the season, dropping the 14th-ranked team in the nation to 11-2-1 (6-2-1 NESCAC).
Bowdoin took a 1-0 lead 23:18 into the contest. Sophia Lemmer took a free kick from just beyond midfield that Julia Patterson flicked the ball up towards Morgen Gallagher, who turned her defender and shot from the edge of the box, burying the ball inside the far post.
The Polar Bears doubled their lead seven minutes later. This time Gallagher sparked the play as she drove the end line and slotted the ball back to Lizzie Sands, who finished with a one-timer in front of the net.
The Camels held an 18-6 edge in shots and 6-0 cornerkick advantage. Rachel Stout made one save for the Polar Bears in the shutout.
The Polar Bears conclude the regular season on Tuesday afternoon at Tufts. The Jumbos host Bowdoin with a 3 p.m. kickoff.
Field hockey
Bowdoin’s Juliana Fiore scored eight minutes into overtime to cap a 3-2 back-and-forth battle at Connecticut College.
The Polar Bears (9-5, 5-4 NESCAC) never trailed the Camels (5-9, 1-8 NESCAC), but watched the hosts tie the game twice and force overtime.
Neither team was able to muster any productive offense in the first half, with both teams scoring two goals in the second frame. Kara Finnerty put Bowdoin on the board 6:01 into the second half. Elizabeth Growney collected the ball in the corner of the circle and directed a shot on net. Finnerty deflected the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Just four minutes later, Bennewitz prevented the Camels from tallying an equalizer with a defensive save on a rebound shot by Caroline Ferro.
Conn. College broke through in the 54th minute on a successful penalty corner. Meg Lembo inserted the ball and eventually took a feed back from Jackie Murphy near the end line. Lembo’s low angle shot snuck inside the near post to tie the game.
Bowdoin again took the lead off another Finnerty tally, just two minutes later. Fiore set up the second goal off a corner, with Finnerty earning another deflection goal. The Camels forced overtime with an equalizer with five minutes left in regulation. Jamie Navoni notched a solo shot drive to the far post.
Off the Polar Bears’ third corner, Fiore carried the ball to her right and buried her shot inside the near post.
Bowdoin held a slight 14- 13 edge in shots and 8-4 edge in corners.
Maddie Ferrucci made seven saves in the win. Andi McGraw recorded six saves.
The Polar Bears conclude the regular season on Tuesday afternoon at Tufts. The Jumbos host Bowdoin with a 3 p.m. kickoff.
Men’s soccer
Bowdoin played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer against Connecticut College en route to its first 0-0 tie since 2015.
The tie is the first of the 2017 season for the Polar Bears (10-3- 1, 6-2-1 NESCAC). The Camels are (9-1-4, 4-1-4 NESCAC).
Saturday’s result ensures Bowdoin will host a NESCAC quarterfinal game this upcoming Saturday at Pickard Field. The Polar Bears have a chance to claim the top seed in the conference if they defeat Tufts in their regular-season finale on Tuesday.
Stevie Van Siclen made five saves to notch his seventh shutout of the year for Bowdoin.
Women’s volleyball
Bowdoin split a pair of matches on day two of the Hall of Fame Tournament hosted by Amherst College on Saturday.
The Polar Bears (13-8) swept the Coast Guard, 3-0, in the early match before falling in a five-setter to WPI, 3-2, to close out the tourney.
Against the Coast Guard, Bowdoin eased to the win with set scores of 25-17, 25- 22, 25-14. Caroline Flaharty recorded a dozen kills against just one error to lead the Bowdoin offense, which also received eight kills from Sydney Salle and five from Michelle Albright. Kate Kiser’s 30 assists paced the attack while the first-year also added four blocks to go with Lisa Sheldon’s 20 digs.
WPI and Bowdoin battled throughout, with WPI winning 17-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-21, 15-13. Flaharty connected for 17 kills, while Salle had 13 and Albright 10.

Bowdoin will close out their regular season this upcoming weekend with key NESCAC matches at Wesleyan (Friday, 8 p.m.) and at Connecticut College (Saturday, 2 p.m.).
Football
Trinity used a strong first-half performance to put the game out of reach early in a 63-14 win over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon.
The Bantams remained in first place in the NESCAC, improving to 6-0 this season, while Bowdoin fell to 0-6 overall.
Trinity scored 21 points in the first quarter and added 28 in the second quarter to take a commanding halftime lead.
The Bantams scored on their first touch of the game, forcing a Bowdoin three-and-out and seeing Colin Beaulieu return the punt 55 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring. Max Chipouras added a 23-yard touchdown run and Cliff David scored on a 24-yard touchdown pass to give the Bantams a 21-0 lead after one quarter.
Bowdoin cut into Trinity’s lead early in the second quarter, going 75 yards in 11 plays, capped off by a Griff Stalcup 6-yard touchdown scamper to make it 21-7.
Trinity answered with a pair of touchdown runs in the second quarter — an 8- yard run by Chipouras and a 14-yard run by Sonny Puzzo to extend the lead to 35-7. Beaulieu scored on a long 72- yard run late in the opening half and Trinity added a 2- point conversion to make it 43-7. With seconds left in the opening half, the Bantams added another score on a 34- yard pass from Puzzo to Girard to make it 49-7 at halftime.
Brian Thompson scored on a 4-yard pass from Noah Nelson, capping a 16-play, 61- yard drive for Bowdoin in the fourth quarter.
Trinity totaled 576 yards of offense while holding Bowdoin to 216. Stalcup had 80 yards passing for Bowdoin, while Robert Kollmer had 55-yards rushing. Nick Vailas caught seven passes for 82 yards for Bowdoin.
Bowdoin returns to Whittier Field this upcoming Saturday to host Wesleyan at 12:30 p.m.
Women’s rugby
Bowdoin jumped to a 38-0 halftime lead en route to a convincing 45-5 win at St. Michael’s College on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears improved to 5-1.
Liz D’Angelo opened the scoring one minute into the match, taking advantage of good field position and sharp passing by teammates Kendall Schutzer and Hannah Zuklie to take it into the try zone and adding her own conversion.
St. Michael’s mounted a strong attack from its forwards and the Polar Bears played tough defense for the next 15 minutes, keeping the Purple Knights from scoring on several occasions.
Hard running from the base of the Bowdoin scrum gained Satya Kent two tries on the day, both converted by D’Angelo, who went three for four in conversion kicks.
Vianney Gomezgil Yaspik capitalized on three of her 10 carries with a hat trick (15 points). Schutzer converted two of her co-captain’s three tries.
Bowdoin is scheduled to host Molloy College at 11 a.m. this upcoming Saturday at Pickard Field.
