BRUNSWICK

Tours at the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum in Brunswick, owned and operated by Pejepscot Historical Society, end for the season on Veterans’ Day weekend, Nov. 10-12, with free admission all veterans, active military, and their families.

Operating on a reduced schedule since Columbus Day, the museum offers guided tours on the hour Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. The last tour leaves at 3 p.m.

On Veterans’ weekend, several recently acquired newspapers owned by Chamberlain will be on display, and everything in the museum shop will be on sale for at least 25 percent off. Light refreshments will be throughout the day.

“Although we offer a regular discount during the season to vets and active military, this free weekend is our way of highlighting the dedication and sacrifice of our servicemen and women,” said PHS Executive Director Larissa Vigue Picard. “Chamberlain, himself a decorated veteran, supported and championed fellow veterans throughout his professional and personal life.”

While Chamberlain is best known for his leadership of the 20th Maine Regiment at Gettysburg during the Civil War, he was also president of Bowdoin College in his later years and Governor of Maine for four one-year terms.

The house contains his Gettysburg boots, horse’s saddle, original Medal of Honor, Governor’s chair, family furniture, and many other items.
