NEW VINEYARD (AP) — The 4-year-old child whose leg was severed in an accident involving a front-end loader at a Maine gravel pit is in stable condition.

The Sun-Journal reports Adam Mattson, of New Vineyard, lost his right leg Monday while he was with his grandfather at the family’s gravel pit. Jessica Harris, a family friend, says the boy is in stable condition at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols says the injury happened when the child got underneath the bucket. The grandfather had exited the vehicle and turned his attention away from the child when the bucket lost hydraulic pressure, lowered and severed one of the child’s legs.

Harris has organized a gofundme page to help the boy and his grandparents, who are both legal guardians.
