SOCCER

USL: Officials from the United Soccer League will be in Portland on Nov. 10 to talk with city officials and visit potential home fields for a professional team that would begin play in 2019, according to WCSH-TV.

The group plans to visit Fitzpatrick Stadium, Memorial Field at Deering High and the Wainwright Sports Complex in South Portland.

The USL plans to start a league that would play on the third level of pro soccer in the U.S. It currently operates a league that competes on the sport’s second level.

COLLEGES

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Casey Meissner recorded a hat trick and top-seeded Lasell defeated fourth-ranked St. Joseph’s 3-1 in the GNAC semifinals in Newton, Massachusetts.

Meissner put Lasell (12-5) up 1-0 52 seconds into the match and added goals in the 15th and 21st minute. Hannah Butler scored for the Monks (13-6-1).

Brook Troup had nine saves for St. Joseph’s, and Sarah LaClair stopped five shots for Lasell.

TENNIS

WTA ELITE TROPHY: Second-seeded CoCo Vandeweghe opened the tourney in Zhuhai, China, with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Chinese wild-card entry Peng Shuai.

Vandeweghe overcame a slow start and two service breaks in the first set, recovering to finish with six aces and converting five of her eight break-point chances in the Bougainvillea group.

SKIING

TELEVISION: Bode Miller, a six-time Olympic medalist and only American to compete in Alpine skiing at five Winter Games, will work for NBC as an analyst alongside Dan Hicks at the Pyeongchang Games in February.
