HARPSWELL — Voters in Harpswell overwhelmingly passed two municipal referendums at the ballot box.
Voters approved Question 1 by 80 percent. Question 1 allots $50,000 from unassigned funds to continue appealing preliminary flood maps issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency earlier this year. The flood maps affect National Flood Insurance Program rates, and maps indicating flooding is more likely can send insurance rates in coastal communities skyrocketing. Harpswell, along with other Maine coastal towns, is working with Ransom Consulting to appeal the preliminary flood maps.
Question 2, which passed with 87 percent of the vote, authorizes the board of selectmen to accept an easement on property along Leeman Road. The easement will allow the town to replace two culverts to help with drainage issues in that area.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
