TOPSHAM
Topsham firefighters were at Rusty’s Market for more than three hours Sunday morning trying to identify a strange smell reported by employees.
Acting Topsham Fire Chief Mike Labbe said the fire department was called to the store on at 38 Middlesex Road at 7:34 a.m. Sunday for a possible gas smell in the building. Firefighters couldn’t find the source and called the business’s natural gas provider, fuel pump and refrigeration vendor companies, which all responded. Firefighters finally located a freon leak on a basement cooler.
While firefighters worked to locate the cause of the odor, the store remained evacuated, Labbe said. Crews didn’t leave the scene until 11:18 a.m.
