It’s been an impressive run for the Thornton Academy golf program over the last few years as the Trojans have been one of the top teams in the state.
Senior Jordan Laplume has been a major part of the Trojans’ success and she wrapped up her stellar career with a second-place finish at the state tournament this fall.
“I really wanted to do well my senior year to close it all out. I ended up doing really well and our team did really well too,” said Laplume. “We won the SMAA division (championship) and we placed third at the team state championship which was a great improvement from last year because we were seventh last year.”
While Laplume is sad to see her high school golf career come to a close, the senior was thrilled to have a chance to play with her brother Jacob for the last few years.
“It was awesome. My junior year I got bumped up to be the one man and he was bumped up to be the two man, so we played every single match together from junior year to senior year and it really was awesome,” said Laplume. “He brought such a calm to me and vice versa, like I made him super calm, too. We were just so comfortable playing with each other and we played together every practice.”
Laplume will cherish the memories she made playing alongside Jacob.
“He was just such a great support with all my summer tournaments that he’s in and he came to watch me in individual (states) … that’s something I will miss so much about Thornton golf is playing with him,” Laplume added.
The 2017 Journal Tribune Most Valuable Player also believes TA coach Jeff Camire’s decision to pair her with Jacob and Armand Ouellette helped all three of them succeed.
“Coach would always pair me, Armand and Jacob in the same group for practice so we would push each other and it was really good for the team,” Laplume said.
Laplume would have loved to finish her career with a state championship, but she was satisfied with her performance at the individual girls state meet.
“(Scarborough’s) Elizabeth Lacognata had an unbelievable round, kudos to her. I was just trying to play my own game and I ended up shooting only 1-over par, 73, so I was still very happy with my results, she just happened to have a better day than I did,” said Laplume.
While Laplume wasn’t able to capture an individual state championship, she will leave quite a legacy at Thornton Academy — and will be a role model for female golfers for years to come.
“My coach made it very known that I placed top five in the state every single year, which he didn’t think any other Thornton Academy, girl or guy, had ever done,” said Laplume. “That was really huge for me because freshman year I think I was fifth. Sophomore year I was fourth, and then junior year I was second and this year I was second again. He said it was a huge, huge accomplishment, and I’m really glad I could do well my senior year to finish it off.”
