Due to a decline in enrollment, Southern New Hampshire University is closing its campus near Cook’s Corner in September, the college confirmed Monday, ending a four-decade presence in Brunswick.
Libby May, senior vice president of communications for SNHU, said the college remains committed to helping students complete their degrees, whether it is online, or through a transfer to another institution.
“That is our most important goal,” she said.
Advisers are assisting students to determine how to finish their degrees, if their degree coursework is not completed by September, she said.
There are 60 students who attend classes at the college’s 15,000-square-foot rented space at 10 Tibbetts Drive, near Walmart. There are 29 adjunct faculty members that staff the college, she said, but no full-time professors.
According to the college, SNHU’s Brunswick center has been serving civilians and military members for more than 40 years, offering more than 200 undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs in traditional classroom and blended formats.
No other locations closing
May said in-person enrollment has declined at continuing education centers. She said no other locations will be closing at this time, but added the Nashua, New Hampshire, location closed last year.
The closing of the Brunswick location also affects another educational institution — Midcoast Senior College. The college rents space from SNHU and, in an email, said it has started to look for other locations to continue teaching its courses.
“This means that Midcoast Senior College may not be able to offer classes at the Brunswick Center after the conclusion of our spring 2018 semester,” Midcoast Senior College President James Wilkes said in the email.
The senior college’s board of directors is actively searching for a site to provide academic courses. “Although the kind of building MSC needs is limited in the Midcoast area,” Wilkes said, “two locations have already been identified as possibilities and we have made contact with the owners.”
