Marguerite “Betty” (Hayes) Whitney of Sun City, formerly of Black River, NY and Keene, NH, died on Nov. 4 in Riverview, FL. She was 99. Betty was born on April 1, 1918 in Greater Sudbury, Ontario.

Betty’s family moved to Black River, NY when she was young. She was educated in local schools and graduated from Black River High School and Watertown Business College.

Betty celebrated life every day by taking a long walk and an energetic swim, and by taking every opportunity to dance. She was an artist who reflected the beauty of the Monadnock Region in her many oil paintings. She supported women’s rights through her work with the League of Women Voters and as a Girl Scout Leader. Her enchantment with animals was evident in her service to the Cheshire Kennel Club, of which she was Secretary for a number of years. Pink was her favorite color, and she wore it so often that many of her friends called her “Pink Betty”.

Betty is predeceased by her husband, Darwin Whitney; her siblings Harry Hayes, Eleanor (Sue) Stevens, and Edward (Sam) Hayes.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon Hayes Whitney of South Harpswell, ME (Donald Clifford) and Kathleen Hayes Whitney- Heuss (David Heuss) of Concord, NH; her first cousin Kathryn ‘Betty’ Siver of North Royalton, Ohio; 5 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Inspired Living, Dorothy Cares, and Life Path Hospice for the loving care given Betty.

Betty will be interred in the family plot in Black River Cemetery. The family will hold a private Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to Life Path Hospice, 3725 Upper Creek Drive, Ruskin, FL 33573 or to your local food bank.
