After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Morse High School boys basketball team took control in the second quarter and pulled away for a 65-50 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference victory over Lincoln Academy on Monday at Bath Middle School.

Just three days after an emotional loss to Brunswick on Friday, the Shipbuilders ran their record to 1-1.

“It was an important win for us,” said Morse coach Brian Bennett, whose Shipbuilders visit Westbrook on Friday at 7 p.m. “We used a lot of energy in the game with Brunswick, then had one practice and right back at it Monday. We found that energy.”

The Eagles (0-2) led 18-16 after a quarter, but Morse grabbed a 32-26 halftime lead and extended out to a 42-34 advantage after three quarters.

In the fourth, Lincoln Academy made a run, but fouls, along with a pair of technical fouls, allowed Morse to cash in on its chances.

Tom Warren had 24 points and eight rebounds to power Morse, while Parker Onorato had 15 points and four steals. The Shipbuilders were 20-of-34 from the freethrow line.

Zach Small scored 35 points, including six 3- pointers, as the host Bobcats improved to 2-0 with a Mountain Valley Conference win over the Falcons in Richmond’s home opener.

The Bobcats improved to 2-0 and visit Oak Hill on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

After a 13-13 deadlock through a quarter, Richmond claimed a 34-25 halftime lead. Mountain Valley (1-1) chipped away, drawing to 48-46 through three quarters.

Matt Rines added 17 points to Richmond’s total, while Casey Gorman chipped in 10. Small had a double-double with 11 rebounds and dished out eight assists, with Rines picking up four helpers and four steals.

Taylor Pelletier and William Sorensen paced Mountain Valley with 17 and 16 points, respectively, while Keegan Davis added 14.

At the free-throw line, the Falcons were 10-of-18, with the Bobcats finishing 11-of- 24.

The visiting Bulldogs rolled to an MVC win at Wiscasset in the home opener for the Wolverines.

Wiscasset is 0-2 heading into Wednesday’s game at Madison (7 p.m.), while Hall-Dale improved to 2-0.

Dylan Orr had 11 points to lead the Wolverines.

Dale Abbott paced Hall- Dale with 18 points.

The Wolverines dropped their MVC opener on Friday to the Cobras.

Tied at 15 after a quarter, Carrabec took control, outscoring Wiscasset 20-8 for a 35-23 halftime lead.

Kobe Carrier had 11 points for Wiscasset, with Chris Loyola adding eight. Matt Chapman pulled down 10 rebounds.

Evan Holzworth led Carrabec with 25 points, followed by Alex Stanford with 23.

Girls hockey

BRUNSWICK — Lydia Guay scored with less than two seconds remaining in regulation to lift Yarmouth/Freeport to a 2-1 victory over Mt. Ararat/ Morse at Sidney J. Watson Arena.

The Clippers earned their first win to improve to 1-5-1, while the Eagles fell to 0-5.

Yarmouth/ Freeport grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the opening frame. Lizzie Guertler finished a pass from Emma Moll. Lily Caulfield also earned an assist.

Lexie Saxton tied the game for the Eagles, finishing a rebound of an Eola Saucier shot.

Yarmouth/Freeport hosts Edward Little/Leavitt/ Poland on Saturday at 3:20 p.m., while the Eagles meet rival Brunswick on Friday at 5:15 p.m.

Girls basketball

NEWCASTLE — Eleanor Mathews scored 11 points as Lincoln Academy slipped past Morse, 39-25, in KVAC action.

The Shipbuilders are 0-2 and slated to host Westbrook on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Eagles improved to 2-0.

Morse led 7-5 after a quarter, but a 14-3 deficit in the second gave Lincoln Academy a 19-10 halftime lead. Morse trailed 28-20 after three.

Sierra Wallace led the Shipbuilders with nine points, while Marissa Parks and Marija Medenica split 10 points down the middle.
